Overview

The HR Manager provides strategic and transactional support on organizational and employee matters including coaching, HR process expertise and other general HR activities. This role is critical in executing all HR initiatives, providing available and responsive internal customer support, and driving HR functional excellence and continuous process improvement across the enterprise. Partners with the Sr. Human Resource Manager, Corporate HR Business Unit, & PG HR teams to create and drive a world-class HR organization that delivers an unrelenting commitment to operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Management of site performance management processes; coaching leaders on tough conversations, co-creating performance improvement plans and individual development plans, and guiding leaders through the Talent Review process.
  • Ensures the development of talent at all levels and the implementation of succession plans for key roles.
  • Oversee associate relations programs including investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations.
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs. Uses analytics and metrics to develop workforce planning and other organizational strategies to improve the organization's capabilities. Partnering with Corporate Talent Acquisition for exempt positions.
  • Supports the EHS representative alongside the EHS Manager in planning and implementing safety policies and procedures in compliance with Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, ensuring the protection of workers from health and safety hazards in the workplace
  • Managing the employee life cycle. Serves as subject matter expert for all HR systems and performs administrative tasks in support of the organization.
  • Manage and partner with the Plant Manager and leadership team providing direction to labor relations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Administers employee benefits at the site level. Partnering with Finance and the Corporate Benefits Manager to resolve employee inquiries.
  • Conducts wage surveys to ensure the organization maintains its competitive advantage.
  • Coordinates management training in the topics of interviewing, hiring, terminations, promotions, performance review, safety, and sexual harassment.
  • Additional responsibilities as delegated by the direct or project supervisor.

COMPLIANCE & INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of Ontario’s Employment Standards Act and ability to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Understanding of the Pay Equity Act (in provinces like Ontario and federally) – requires proactive steps to ensure equal pay for work of equal value.
  • Familiarity with mandatory paid statutory holidays, paid vacation (varies by province), and parental leave requirements.
  • Expertise in labor relations and trends that will impact labor costs and our ability to attract and retain a strong workforce (direct, indirect, and professional).
  • Experience with Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) and supplemental health & dental trends: employers often provide additional health/dental plans covering prescriptions, dental, vision, and paramedical services (e.g., physiotherapy).
  • Knowledge of pension plan options: group registered retirement savings plan (RRSP), Defined Contribution/Benefit pensions, or Deferred Profit-Sharing Plans (DPSPs).
  • Experience with the Office of the Employer Adviser (OEA) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), as applicable.
  • Understanding of Employment Insurance (EI) – a federally mandated program that provides temporary income to unemployed workers.
  • Awareness of French Language Laws (Bill 101) – strict requirements on using French in the workplace and on signage (as relevant to operations in Québec or federally regulated workplaces with French language requirements).

Qualifications

  • A minimum of eight (8) years of human resources experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
  • 5 years of experience working with ADP or similar HR systems
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience with MS Office Suite at an intermediate to advanced level

 

PREFERRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • CPHR (Canada), CHRP or CHRL (Ontario) preferred; PHR and/or SPHR also acceptable
